Understanding the graphs

The graphs analyse People Survey scores for the most and least engaged teams from 8,570 government business units, focusing on leadership behaviours. The scores are for survey statements relating to the four enablers of engagement in the Engage for Success framework: strong narrative; engaging managers; employee voice; integrity.

Each graph includes a relatively straight blue line sloping down gently from left to right. This is the engagement index score for the business units listed across the x axis (units are not listed by name, just organisation, to avoid individuals being identifiable). The blue line slopes down as the engagement index scores are shown from highest to lowest.

The engagement scores range from 93% to 12%, as shown on the y axis of the graphs.

Business units’ scores for specific statements in the People Survey are mapped against their engagement index scores to see if there is a correlation between them, i.e. to see to what extent people’s engagement is impacted by a specific statement, if at all.

Please note, there are two types of correlation:

  • the trend correlation where the strength of the relationship between the engagement index line and the line for the specific People Survey statement is scored in terms of closeness in direction of travel. The strength of this correlation is shown on the graphs as a positive or negative percentage score (i.e. +20% in the first graph for the statement “My manager helps me understand how I contribute to the organisation’s objectives”)
  • the numeric-value correlation is simply the size of the number of a business unit’s engagement index and the size of its score for a specific People Survey statement. For example, you can see on the first graph how the numeric values for the enagement index and the scores for the People Survey statement “My manager helps me understand how I contribute to the organisation’s objectives” have a reasonably close relationship, all being above 63%. On the second graph, however, the relationship is very week between the numeric values for the engagement index and the scores for the People Survey statement “In my job, I am clear about what’s expected of me” since the engagement index averages a little under 25% while the statement scores average around 60%.

A positive percentage score for the trend on a graph means lines are following the direction of one another whereas a negative score means lines are deviating. Anything with a positive score of 25% or more is a significant trend correlation.

Note in the thrid and fourth graphs how strong both the trend and numeric-value correlations are between the engagement index and the statement the “Organisation keeps me informed about matters that affect me”. Note also how this strength of correlation holds true for the business units with both the highest and lowest engagement scores.
